Advent is a special time before Christmas when the family is able to reflect, pray and celebrate the birth of Jesus. It’s like a countdown to Christmas! A special tradition I love sharing with my family is creating a handmade Advent Wreath.
What is an Advent Wreath?
An Advent wreath is a special circle of candles we light as we get ready for Christmas. Each week, we light one more candle to help us remember how we’re waiting for the birth of Jesus. Each candle represents something special – hope, peace, joy, and love. The candles show how the world gets brighter as Christmas gets closer.
On December 1st, I have my children create their own Advent wreath out of recycled items. It’s a very simple yet engaging project to help them connect to the meaning of Christmas.
Preparations: First you will need to gather the following materials: 1 paper plate, 4 toilet tube rolls, yellow crayon and some paint (green, purple, pink and yellow).
Advent Wreath Step by Step Instructions:
- Cut the inner circle of the paper plate and have your child paint the outer circle green.
- Paint 3 toilet paper tubes in purple and 1 in pink.
- Glue the tubes to the green painted wreath. (I use the glue gun because it makes it stick longer.)
- Cut 4 ovals from the inner circle plate and color them yellow representing the flames.
Every Sunday light a candle with the paper flame to celebrate the upcoming birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
